Summerville, SC Local Information

Summerville is the outskirts of what is usually considered the Charleston area. Because it is further inland, everything in Summerville is more affordable – real estate, home insurance, taxes, etc. This area is ideal for home buyers who want to live near Charleston but don’t want the higher home prices that come with living around the city and the coast in general. Summerville has a small town feel to it, but it’s quickly becoming more developed as home buyers take advantage of its affordable real estate.

Summerville residents can take Interstate 26 to get to downtown Charleston or the beaches for an afternoon. However, residents have plenty of entertainment options without having to leave town. The Azalea Square shopping center is located on Hwy 17 (which is also called North Main Street). It has a World Market, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Ross, and TJ Maxx. It also has a movie theater with 16 individual stadium theaters, so there is always a good selection of movies and show times. This section of Summerville has a wide selection of chain restaurants, including Moe’s Southwest Grill, Chick-fil-A, and Starbucks.

Downtown Summerville is also popular and has a very different selection of things to do compared to Azalea Square. Downtown has a quaint feel to it and features antique stores and locally owned restaurants. For more entertainment, residents can also take a 10 minute drive into North Charleston which has a wide range of things to do.

The public schools in Summerville SC are some of the best in all of Charleston. Specifically, the Dorchester School District 2 consistently ranks well for both Charleston and South Carolina. This school district has 11 elementary schools: Beech Hill, Eagle Nest, Flowertown, Fort Dorchester, Knightsville, Newington, Oakbrook, Spann, Summerville, William Reeves, Windsor Hill. You’ll find 6 middle schools: Alston, Dubose, Gregg, Oakbrook, River Oaks, and Rollings Middle School of the Arts. There are 3 high schools: Ashley Ridge, Fort Dorchester, and Summerville High.

If the quality of public schools is important to you, be sure to check out the school district’s website. You can get more information on Summerville schools there and also confirm that the home you buy is actually zoned for the specific school district you want.
