Sullivans Island, SC Local Information

Sullivan’s Island is the most historic of Charleston’s beaches. Fort Moultrie played a major role in naval defense from the Revolutionary War up until World War II. In fact, South Carolina’s nickname the Palmetto State comes from the success during the Battle of Fort Moultrie. During the Revolutionary War, British cannons could obliterate the traditionally brick fortifications. However, the palmetto tree logs that soldiers used during this particular battle held their own without shattering. Today, visitors can tour Fort Moultrie to learn more about its role in our country’s coastal defense.

Sullivan’s Island is also historic for one of its former residents, Edgar Allan Poe. Before he gained enough success to support himself solely from writing, Poe enlisted in the army and lived on Fort Moultrie for about two years. Poe’s short story “The Gold Bug” is set on Sullivan’s Island and is probably largely based on the short time he spent on the island.

Sullivan’s is about the only area in Charleston where you can find historic homes in a beach setting. A lot of the homes on Sullivan’s Island were built from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. During this time, wealthy Charlestonians spent their summers here to be near the constant breezes coming from the beach. The oldest homes on the island can be difficult to buy because they rarely come up for sale on the MLS. Mostly, these homes just pass down through generations of families who have lived in Charleston for a long time. However, it’s certainly possible to find homes dating from the early 1900s if you have a wider time frame and are willing to wait at least 6 months to see what comes on the market.

Real Estate on Sullivan’s Island is made up of mostly single family houses. There are only two main condo buildings on the island – and no townhouse communities. For condos, you can check Island House and The Officer’s Quarters to see what is currently for sale.

Sullivan’s Island has very little commercial development. You’ll find a few bars and restaurants located at the entrance of the island. However, most residents and guests take the 5-10 minute drive to Mt. Pleasant, which has a little bit of everything (shopping, restaurants, movies, etc.). Also, downtown Charleston is just a 10-15 minute drive.
