Charleston Air Force Base and the Navy also make up a sizable portion of Charleston’s job market. Combined, the military provides an estimated 27,000 jobs for Charleston residents. Also, one of the Port of Charleston’s five terminals is located in North Charleston. Trident Medical Center is the main medical employer of the region and offers jobs from medical receptionists to spinal cord specialists to physical therapists. Although these are North Charleston’s biggest employers, you’ll also find lots of jobs in retail, education (including Trident Technical College), and the food and beverage industry.

Most of the commercial development in North Charleston is concentrated off Rivers Avenue. You’ll find Northwoods Mall, lots of big chain restaurants, and strip malls with everything from Rooms to Go to Barnes and Noble. For more shopping options, check out the Tanger Outlets off Aviation Avenue.

The North Charleston Coliseum is home to the area’s professional hockey team, the South Carolina Stingrays. When the team is not playing, the ice is covered up so that the coliseum can act as a venue to concerts and various other events. For outdoor activities, Wannamaker County Park is one of the largest of the Charleston County Parks. It has over 1,000 acres of walking trails, play parks, picnic sites, and intramural fields. It also has a dog park and a seasonal water park, Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Waterpark.

Academic Magnet High School has been ranked one of the best public high schools in the country and regularly sends its graduates to Ivy League colleges. The Charleston School of the Arts is also a great public school. Its students range from sixth to twelfth grade and specialize in a specific art, including orchestra, choir, visual arts, dance, and theater. Students must apply to these high schools in order to attend, and admission is quite competitive. Buyers looking for affordable homes with good public schools often choose Summerville over North Charleston since its Dorchester District 2 is one of the best in all of Charleston.

Some of the most popular townhouse communities include University Park, The Park at Rivers Edge, Mixson, Oak Terrace Preserve, and Lake Palmetto. Condos are a little harder to find.
