Isle of Palms, SC Local Information
Isle of Palms is one of the most popular Charleston beaches for residents and tourists alike. Because Mt. Pleasant is just 5 minutes away, Isle of Palms is the primary beach for Mt. P residents. Isle of Palms has a good bit of entertainment on the island. You can get seafood at The Boathouse or listen to live music at The Windjammer. However, if you want to go see a movie or have a large selection of shops and restaurants, Mt. Pleasant is just over the Isle of Palms Connector. And, if you want to head to downtown Charleston, it’s within a 20 minute drive of Isle of Palms.
IOP (as many locals call it) has some of the most affordable beach real estate in Charleston. Beach houses make up the overwhelming majority of home sales. However, you’ll find options for condos and some townhouses as well. Oceanside, Seaside Inn, and Sea Cabin on the Ocean offer condos that are beachfront or within a few minutes’ walk to the beach. Townhouses can be more difficult to find since these rarely come up for sale on the MLS.
You’ll find more condo and town home options in Wild Dunes, which is a private resort located on the northern section of the Isle of Palms. Because the resort is gated, IOP residents and guests are not allowed in Wild Dunes. Some IOP homeowners consider having the resort on the island a pro because of the high real estate prices associated with the community. On the other hand, some Isle of Palms homeowners (and prospective buyers) don’t like being restricted from part of the island. IOP real estate does not appear to be affected by the resort because Isle of Palms sees a lot of demand from home buyers on its own accord.
Every year, Isle of Palms has more than 20,000 visitors and tourists. Unlike some of the other Charleston beaches, though, Isle of Palms also has a lot of full time residents that stay on the island throughout the year. The Isle of Palms Recreation Center is a great way to get involved in the community for those residents who live year round on the island. It has programs and events for all ages. You’ll find classes for dance, yoga, and Tae Kwon Do. You can even take your dog to obedience school at the Center. Youth sports leagues are offered for kids aged 5 to 12, and adult leagues are available for basketball, softball, and volleyball.
