Daniel Island, SC Local Information

Ownership of Daniel Island has passed through several hands in the past 100 years. During this time, it was used for everything from farming to a private hunting resort. In the early 1990s, the Guggenheim Foundation sold Daniel Island, and the land was annexed by Charleston. Because residential and commercial development did not start until this time, you’ll find that Daniel Island is one of the newest suburbs of Charleston.

Unlike most of the other Charleston areas that were developed over the course of many decades, Daniel Island was developed as a master planned community from the very beginning. Houses, townhouses, and condos are intermingled with parks as well as shops and restaurants. The goal was to create a self-sustained community with a small town feel. Buyers are generally very impressed with Daniel Island and like that it feels so safe and secluded.

You’ll find shops, restaurants, and grocery stores all conveniently located on Daniel Island. The Charleston Battery, Charleston’s professional soccer team, has its home stadium on Daniel Island as well. So, from April to August, you can catch a home game several times a month. After many of the weekend night games, the stadium hosts fireworks for the kids.

The Family Circle Tennis Center also brings plenty of entertainment options for Daniel Islanders. It hosts the Family Circle Cup, which is one of the biggest annual tournaments in women’s tennis. It draws the best names in the sport, including Serena and Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, and Maria Sharapova. The event also draws about 90,000 visitors during the entire tournament, which usually takes place in April. During the off season, the tennis center is used for programs for kids and adults as well as an occasional concert. For more entertainment, residents often take the 10 minute drive to Mt. Pleasant or the 25 minute drive to downtown Charleston.

Daniel Island’s private country club has some of the nicest amenities in all of Charleston. It boasts golf courses designed by Tom Fazio and Rees Jones. The club house offers indoor and outdoor dining venues, a ballroom for private events, and bocce and croquet lawns. You’ll also find a swimming pool and a fantastic tennis and fitness center.

With the exception of downtown Charleston, real estate on Daniel Island is the priciest non-beach real estate in the area. Daniel Island Park is the most exclusive community on the island and is made up of houses, townhouses, and condos. The views of the golf course and the Wando River are unparalleled for any Daniel Island neighborhood. Cochran Park and Codner’s Ferry Park are also highly sought after neighborhoods. The most affordable subsections of Daniel Island are Etiwan Park and Smythe Park.

If you’re looking for condos, check out Pier View, Daniel’s Landing, The Oaks at Rivers Edge, and Riverside. Also, Daniel Island Park and Smythe Park have condos as well as single family houses. If you want to live in the downtown section of Daniel Island, you should see the condos at Seven Farms Drive. These are located directly over the storefronts, so they’re in a great location. Also, the condos on River Landing Drive are definitely worth a look. They’re also in the downtown section but are set up more like regular condo buildings.

You’ll find townhouses in Barfield Park and Grove Park. Subsections with both houses and townhouses include Daniel Island Park, Center Park, and Pierce Park.
