Magazines and websites consistently rank Charleston, SC as one of the top places to live in the country. Southern Living is usually the most generous, ranking Charleston in categories ranging from Best Southern City to the Reader’s Choice to Best Festivals to Most Mannerly City. In fact, Charleston has even received Lifetime Achievement Awards because it has won in so many categories for so many years.
One of the most recent accolades has been from Forbes, which named Charleston as one of the world’s Ten Smartest Cities. The magazine used factors such as the economy, livability, and infrastructure in determining its results. Seattle and Amsterdam were among Charleston’s rivals. Charleston specifically was noted for preserving the city’s history while promoting economic expansion. Boeing’s recent decision to develop an assembly facility was one of the biggest boosts in determining Charleston’s economic potential for the future.
Forbes’ vote for the Smartest Cities comes only a few months after naming Charleston #9 in Strongest Real Estate Markets in the country. Forbes compared cities with more than 500,000 people and looked at percentage lost in home prices and well as the expected time to recovery.
Charleston is also considered one of the top places to retire. Perhaps the most noted company in this field is AARP, which named Charleston as one of the top five Dream Towns in the U.S. for retirees. Unlike some of the other cities to make the list, Charleston is not made up solely of retirees. You’ll find that there’s quite a mix of ages here. And, perhaps this is part of what contributes to Charleston’s appeal to retirees.
Travel guides also tend to favor Charleston in their “best of” lists. Charleston was ranked the #4 city to visit in the US by Travel and Leisure. Conde Nast Traveler named Charleston #2. The Lonely Planet Travel Guides named Charleston as one of the Top Ten Places in the World to See in 2010. Charleston was the only city in the US to make this top ten.
This past year, other top ten lists have named Charleston in categories like Most Livable Cities, Top Cities for Technology Jobs, America’s Friendliest Cities, and Best Shopping Districts. In addition, the tennis facilities and golf courses in Charleston are usually ranked high - especially those in Kiawah Island, Seabrook Island, Daniel Island, I'on and Dunes West (both are neighborhoods in Mt. Pleasant), and Wild Dunes Resort.
